3D printing classroom guides

Two week-long introductions to CAD and 3D printing, adapted for middle school and high school students.

Cover of the Fundamentals of 3D Printing classroom guide.

From a first model to a first print

I developed these guides for Southern Utah University’s Department of Engineering & Technology in collaboration with BZI Steel. The goal was to take students from no prior experience to modeling and printing their own projects over one week.

Two starting points

The middle school materials use TinkerCAD, accessible language, and visual examples. The high school materials go further into design decisions, tolerances, and iteration.

I wrote the curriculum, made the illustrations, and organized the slides and quick-start guides. I also taught the class with support from a teaching aide with CAD experience.

Materials to use and revisit

The finished PDFs provide a resource for the classroom and a reference students can return to while working. Both versions are available here, so the work can be evaluated directly.
